How much does your frame of mind affect your attitude toward a skill or task? In a word ... LOTS! Even your definition of the words "skill" and "task" can create a much different scenario for you which will lead to a very different result.
| skill, n. - great ability or proficiency; expertise that comes from training |
|
task, n. - a piece of work assigned or demanded of a person; an undertaking involving labor or difficulty |
|
Let's apply those definitions to an example. How about networking? Do you see networking and developing social relationships with strangers as a skill or a task? A skill takes practice and focused attention. Skills should be developed. You should work on getting better, seek help, get a mentor, ask for feedback. As task is like taking out the garbage ... no skill needed, just basic directions. No real opportunity for improvement ... you just do it to get it over with.
So, are you developing your skills as a networker or are you more focused on "getting it over with?" Which will get you a better result?
What other necessary areas of your personal and professional life are you seeing as a skill or a task? Would a change in perception get you a better result?
